Meeting – Friday 5th December 2014

Thank you to those who attended the short notice meeting on the 28th November. Around 20 people devoted their evening towards the cause and great progress has been made. Roughly 30% of the people there were residents of Ashburton and they discussed the huge economic benefits that a railway presence could create for the town. The next stage will be to create a formal group with the appointment of roles and responsibilities for those who wish to get involved and this will take place at the next meeting on 5th December in St Lawrence Chapel, Ashburton at 19.00. This will once again be open to all those who would like to find out more about the possibilities and benefits of preservation of the unique station area and eventual railway reinstatement to the town.
I look forward to seeing you all there and please spread the word!

Meeting 28th November 2014

A meeting was held 28th November 2014, attended by 19 people, a large proportion were also members of the South Devon Railway Association. There was also a good turn out of residents from Ashburton, it was very reassuring to hear their views on the master plan.

At the meeting it was decided to proceed with the process of forming a formal group with the aims of preserving the heritage of the station site.

A meeting is to be organised within the next two weeks with the aim of electing a committee to represent the group and to agree a formal letter to submit to the Dartmoor National Park before the end of their consultation period on Friday 12th December 2014.

Statement From the South Devon Railway Trust

We are very grateful to the South Devon Railway Trust, who have given us their blessing and offered to support us where possible. However with a whole host of important projects around the railway that need completing, rolling stock, locomotives and track to maintain plus the actual running of the railway they are not able to offer any financial assistance.

The trust are also submitting a letter to the Dartmoor National Park Authority in response to the Chuley Road, Ashburton Master Plan explaining their views on the plan and stating their support for Friends of Ashburton Station, we hope this will help to persuade the National Park to listen to our alternative ideas for the Chuley Road Master Plan.

Below is the official statement from the South Devon Railway Trust;

“The South Devon Railway Trust fully supports the retention of the original railway buildings at Ashburton Station in a form as close to the original as possible and put to a use that is sympathetic to their railway heritage. Furthermore, the Trust would wish to see that what remains of the original route is safeguarded so that train services could be returned to Ashburton should it prove feasible to do so in the future.” – South Devon Railway Trust 28/11/14
